Information About Onyx:

Onyx is the banded variety of chalcedony gemstone, which is a type of quartz.

Most commonly known as a black stone, it is usually not a pure black in its natural state, and in many cases, lighter-colored agates are dyed black to be sold as onyx.

COMMON COLORS: Black

HARDNESS ON MOH'S SCALE: 7

SHAPES FOR CUTTING: Best suited for polished cabochons and beads. Commonly carved into ornaments, figurines, and small trinket boxes. Often cut into crystal point shapes for use in making dangling earrings and pendants. Sometimes laminated with lighter colored stones such as opal for carving into cameos.

Onyx Cabochons, Beads, and Crystal Points are available online at Wire Sculpture Jewelry Supplies.
